FROM SEOUL TO SOHO: CHIEF MAKES ITS NEW YORK DEBUT

The Seoul-born performance brand introduced CHIEF to New York with a three-day SoHo pop-up built around movement, design and a growing global community.

Opening

On July 17, CHIEF opened the doors to its first New York pop-up at The Canvas SoHo on West Broadway, marking a new chapter for the Seoul-born performance and lifestyle brand.

The opening night brought together athletes, creatives, members of New York’s jiu-jitsu community and guests discovering CHIEF for the first time. What began as a brand rooted in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu was presented in SoHo as something broader: technical apparel designed to move naturally between training and everyday life.

For CHIEF, the weekend wasn’t simply an opportunity to introduce another activewear label to New York. It was the first chance for an American audience to experience the brand in person.

A Seoul Idea, Introduced in New York

Founded in 2023, CHIEF grew from a straightforward idea: performance apparel doesn’t have to look like traditional performance apparel.

Its approach combines technical construction with restrained design, clean silhouettes and a more considered use of color. The result is apparel designed for the mats but intentionally understated enough to exist beyond them.

That philosophy has allowed CHIEF to expand beyond its jiu-jitsu roots into HYROX, CrossFit, strength training, yoga, swimming and other forms of movement.

At the SoHo pop-up, that broader identity was visible throughout the space. Performance pieces sat alongside lifestyle apparel and CHIEF’s Great Taste Coffee, giving visitors a more complete introduction to the world surrounding the brand.

More Than a Product Launch

Throughout opening night, visitors were able to see the collections up close, feel the materials and experience CHIEF outside the traditional environment of a gym or jiu-jitsu academy.

That setting was intentional. CHIEF has always occupied the space between performance and lifestyle, and SoHo provided an opportunity to present both sides of the brand together.

From the Mats to Everyday Life

CHIEF’s foundation remains performance. But its ambition extends beyond what happens during a training session.

The same emphasis on lightweight materials, movement and comfort is paired with an aesthetic designed to feel equally natural before training, while traveling or simply moving through everyday life.

It’s an idea that could be seen throughout the SoHo collection: technical pieces presented less like fightwear and more like contemporary activewear.

That distinction is an important part of where CHIEF is heading next.

A New Chapter in the United States

The New York launch represented an introduction rather than a destination.

For CHIEF, entering the United States means bringing the philosophy developed in Seoul to one of the world’s largest performance and jiu-jitsu communities while maintaining the design language that made the brand distinctive in the first place.

The response in SoHo provided an encouraging first look at how that philosophy translates.

CHIEF began in Seoul. Its next chapter is now taking shape in America.
